This park is touted as the “latest great thing for New York. Located on Gansevoort Street and West 20th Street, this park is built on elevated train tracks. After 1980 train service to this station was discontinued and for next thirty years a battle ensued in the city government about what to do with this industrial space. The park opened this spring to much fanfare. It only takes about fifteen minutes to walk the first phase of the park and the second half is expected to be completed in 2010. The park’s enchantment is evident in the unique views it presents not visible from street level or from inside any building overlooking the park. Yachts on the Hudson can be seen gliding by lazily. The park’s design follows a railroad theme with preserved tracks intertwined with grass, flowers and shrubs.
