New York City, the city that never sleeps, is world renowned for its vibrant culture. Every year tourists come by the millions to see New York’s museums, shop along Fifth Avenue, and eat warm pretzels from its street carts. However, New York is also known for its high cost of living and its citizens can only go to the Guggenheim so many times a year. These ideas aren’t just the static suggestions listing free museum nights and City walks. These websites list fun activities from free movies to free dance lessons and parties. Club freeTime lists free concerts, movies, dance lessons, and performances for everyday of the week. The list is free however it costs $2.95 a month to learn the activities specific time and venues. My Open Bar lists lounges, galleries, and clubs offering free drinks and open bars every night of the week. Some of the suggestions have small covers ranging from $5-$15 but most are cover free. FreeNYC lists a variety of activities including free performances, film screenings, and DJ dance venues. New York City Parks Offer Free Things to DoNew York City’s parks are great places to lounge and have picnics but they also offer free things to do including free concerts, movies, gardening days and sports clinics. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation offers an overview of its activities however individual parks also have their own websites. Brooklyn’s Prospect Park offers free concerts at the Bandshell throughout the summer while Battery Park offers drawing, tai chi, and dance lessons. Bryant Park has a summer film festival from June through August. This website is also a great way to learn about what’s happening in the City and to get out of the house. Although activities are not always free, some are. Another way to meet people and find free activities is to check out a local bookstore. Independent bookstores such as McNally Jackson Books or Idlewild, both in Manhattan, offer book clubs and meet the author nights.
