The hip Lark Street Business District in Albany NY is alive with year-round events & festivals in an area of trendy restaurants and thriving upstate New York night life.

This trendy business district in Albany’s historic Center Square neighborhood, dubbed “the village within the village”, is hopping all year long…even in the dead of winter when snow covers the sidewalks and is piled high along the curbs. Upstate New Yorkers are not daunted by cold and snow.

1st Friday – Albany NY

On the first Friday evening of each month, a gallery night called 1st Friday brings folks from around the city and region to the local galleries, museums, businesses, and restaurants. Upstate Artists Guild (an artist’s cooperative), Amrose+Sable Gallery (a small contemporary art gallery), and the Albany Art Room (an open studio for art making) are just a few of the prominent venues.

On a more conservative note, the Albany Institute of History and Art, founded in 1791, with a significant permanent collection of artists from the Hudson River School, also has shorter-term exhibits of contemporary regional and national artists.

LarkFEST & Art on Lark

LarkFEST, begun in 1980 and one of the largest street festivals in the area, attracts more than 60,000 people annually the third Saturday of September. With 5 stages set up on 8 blocks of closed-off Lark Street for live musical performances, the area is buzzing with activity including artists booths and food vendors.

Art on Lark, a smaller event on the third Saturday in June, is more focused on highlighting the Lark Street area as an arts district. The day includes artist booths, musical/dance/theatrical performances, a sidewalk chalk drawing contest, and one-day art installations.
