Lost or Stolen New York E-Z Pass TagHow to Report a Missing DeviceAug 20, 2008 Felicia A. Williams
Many New York commuters have come to rely on the efficiency and money savings benefits of using the E-Z Pass tag to move quickly through New York's bridges and tunnels.
Unfortunately, there are occasions, however, when the time saving E-Z Pass tag is either lost or stolen. Because it is such a vital part of commuting, it is very important to report and replace the missing tag soon as possible. Fortunately, the New York Thruway Authority knows how important it is for New York residents to have the device and has made it easy for E-Z Pass tag holders to report and replace their lost or stolen E-Z Pass device by offering three options: Report the Missing E-Z Pass OnlineEvery E-Z Pass tag holder has an online account through which they can report the device missing. All one has to do is sign on to is go to the New York E-Z Pass website, log onto the account, navigate to "Vehicle/Tag Maintenance" section and click on the "Report Lost or Stolen Tag" link. If there is more than one tag for the account, be sure to select the correct tag. After reporting the lost or stolen device, tag holders can place an order to receive a new tag. Keep in mind however ordering a replacement tag is not free. The New York Thruway Authority charges an administrative fee of $33 to replace an exterior mounted tag and $23 to replace the interior mount. Notify Customer Service by PhoneFor individuals who don't have Internet access, or if for some reason the E-Z Pass website is down, lost/stolen tags can be reported by calling 1-800-333-8655. It's not necessary to have the E-Z Pass tag number. Providing the necessary account information such as name, address and vehicle license plate number will give the customer service representative the information needed to locate the right E-Z Pass account. Send Notification Via MailIf going online or using the phone is not an option, there is always the old standby of using the US Mail system. All one has to do is send a letter to Customer Service Center, PO Box 149004, Staten Island, NY 10314-9004. Be sure to include all of the pertinent information such as vehicle license plate number, tag number (if known), and of course the tag holder's name and location. They will review the information and respond accordingly. Once the E-Z Pass device is reported lost or stolen, the tag holder is not responsible for any charges made against the account. On the flip side, however, if at a later date the tag owner finds the missing E-Z Pass device, the device may not be used because it has been rendered inoperable.
