New York airports to Manhattan

A guide for going to and from JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia

© Lisa Schroeder

Getting to and from the New York City airports can be difficult and expensive without the right information. Here are essential tips for making the trip easier.

JFK Airport

John F. Kennedy International airport is located in the borough of Queens, New York and is about 15 miles from midtown Manhattan. International and domestic travelers will arrive at this airport. After getting through the airport you will have a few options on how to get to the city.

Expensive:

Taxicabs are a set fee of $45 anywhere to or from Manhattan excluding tolls and tip. This is a good option if there is more than one person and if it is early morning or late at night. To get an official yellow cab, there is a taxicab stand outside the airport terminals where someone will ask you where you are going and will give you a slip of paper. The yellow cabs will line up and depending on how many people in the line, you should get one fairly quickly. And depending on where you are going in Manhattan you can ask your driver to go over non-toll bridges. Don’t over tip; a good tip is about $5. And definitely don’t take the offers of taxis from the men who solicit you immediately outside the airport exit doors, they are usually “gypsy cabs” and will charge you too much.

Cheaper:

Take the AirTrain monorail system to the E or A subway stops. The AirTrain costs $5, the subway costs $2. The E train will take you to midtown or downtown Manhattan and takes about one hour to midtown from the AirTrain stop in Jamaica. The A train will take you downtown and the Upper West Side. It will take about 1 ½ hours to the West 4th Street stop in Greenwich Village from the Howard Beach AirTrain stop. The AirTrain option is good for saving money but if you are arriving after 9 pm or departing before 7 am the subway will take much longer and on the weekend sometimes it doesn’t even run. And depending on the Terminal you arrive in, sometimes the AirTrain stop is outside and a little difficult to get to with a lot of luggage.

Newark International Airport

This airport is located in New Jersey but it is easier to get to midtown Manhattan than from LaGuardia or JFK.

Cheaper:

The AirTrain to the New Jersey Transit train will get you to New York’s Penn Station at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue in about one hour. The AirTrain and NJT ticket combined are about $15 one way. When arriving at Newark and going into the city, the AirTrain is free but then you need to buy your NJT ticket to exit the AirTrain station and also use it for the train. This is one ticket; don’t throw it away until you are at Penn Station. And likewise when you are going to Newark from Penn Station, you will have one ticket, so don’t throw it away because you will need it for the AirTrain.

Expensive:

Their taxi system is similar to JFK’s where there is a taxi stand and someone will give you a slip of paper with an estimate of the cost. It will cost about $60 to the Upper West Side excluding tolls and tip, so it can be pricey.

LaGuardia airport

Mostly domestic and some Canadian flights will arrive and depart from this airport. Because this airport is fairly close to Manhattan, getting to and from is generally cheaper and quicker than the other two airports.

Expensive:

Taxis are usually easy to find and to the Upper West Side cost about $30 including tolls and tip. To midtown add about $10, and to downtown add about $20.

Cheaper:

Take the M33 (all terminals except Marine) or M47 bus (for Delta Shuttle Marine Terminal) to and from the 7, E, F subway stops at 74th St./Broadway or Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue stops. This way will take about two hours from midtown and is only recommended during the day; any flights before 8 am or after 5 pm will be difficult to get to using this option.
