Visitors to NYC will find several pet-friendly hotel options and many pet sitters and daycare facilities to ensure their pet's comfort while in the Big Apple.
New York's Central Park – A Doggie Playground
Central Park's acres of grassy fields and wooded areas are paradise to dogs and their owners. Dogs can be off-leash in Central Park from 9 pm until 9 am with certain restrictions. There are many dogs in the park and owners should be alert t at all times. Visitors whose pets are not used to interaction with a lot of other dogs should be mindful of signs of stress or agression.
Shopping with a Pet in NYC
Dogs are welcome in most of New York City’s major department stores including Bloomingdale’s (Lexington Avenue and 59th Street), Bergdorf Goodman (Fifth Avenue and 57th Street), Saks Fifth Avenue (Fifth Avenue and 49th Street) and Macy’s (34th Street and Herald Square). Most shoppers only bring small to medium size dogs to these stores since it is often necessary to carry the pet through bustling departments or on crowded elevators. It is a good idea to bring a pet carrier that can be worn comfortably on the shoulder to facilitate easy browsing.
Many smaller specialty stores are also pet-friendly. Some will offer dog treats or have water bowls set out for thirsty canines. Even major chain store outlets which, in suburban locations may not allow pets, are mostly pet-friendly in NYC including Banana Republic, Victoria’s Secret, Ann Taylor and H&M.
Dining Options for Pet Owners in NYC
Since dogs are not permitted inside restaurants in New York City, visitors will need to opt for many of the outdoor cafes that line the city sidewalks. Particularly pet friendly choices include The Barking Dog Luncheonette with locations in midtown and on the Upper Eastside and the 79th Street Boat Basin Café located at 79th Street and the Hudson River. Recently, some outdoor eateries have started asking diners to have their pets stay on the outside of the café fences. When in doubt, it is best to call first to avoid disappointment.
Getting Around NY with a Pet
Dogs and cats are permitted on New York City Transit buses and subways however they must be in a carrier at all times. Taxi drivers are not required to accept passengers with pets however most will allow animals in carriers. Walking is a great way to see to the city with a pet but be mindful of the rules for cleaning up after your dog and be sure to always carry plastic bags for disposing waste. It is best to keep dogs on a short leash and always under control as there are many distractions on city streets.
