Known as The Village By the Lake, Skaneateles is many things. The name is the Iroquois word for long lake. Skaneateles Lake, the cleanest of the Finger Lakes, is 16 miles in length and, in spots, over 300 feet deep. The village of Skaneateles, population around 2,700 people, is located on the north end of the lake. The first settlers arrived in the area in the 1790s and the village was first incorporated in 1833. Almost from the beginning, Skaneateles has attracted the wealthy and their mansions surround the north end of Skaneateles Lake.
