Tickets for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular are now on sale, marking the end of Summer in New York City.

The Christmas season has begun in New York City this year, as the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular has opened its ticket windows. With Autumn breezes blowing in and children heading back to school, this Rockettes-sparkled prelude to the Christmas show is yet another sign that summer is long gone.

Christmas Spectacular Tickets On Sale as of Aug 2009

On August 25, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular heralded the beginning of ticket sales for 2009 with its annual event, “Christmas in August.” According to news station NY1, the celebration included a Rockettes kickline down 6th Avenue, with special guests, Santa Claus and New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes.

Tynes praised the Rockettes and their precision dancing, saying “There's a lot of teamwork just like football. I think everyone has to be on the same page in order for everything to work. The same thing with a football play (NY1).”

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular will open in 2009 on November 13th. The show will run until December 30th.

Tickets to this year’s Christmas show can be purchased on the Radio City Music Hall website, with prices varying from 45-90$ during non-peak times, to 52-250$ for peak time performances.

As Usual, Santa and Rockettes to Star During Christmas Spectacular

This year’s Christmas Spectacular will feature all the familiar stars, such as Santa and the Rockettes, in their classic numbers. Expect a few surprises though, as the 90 minute Christmas show is always changing from year to year.

Two of the scenes from the Christmas Spectacular have been performed since the early days of the show. “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” has been performed since the Christmas show’s inception in 1933. This legendary scene involves the Rockettes in perfect formation, being knocked down by cannon fire, yet remaining in perfect time and form.

The Living Nativity is the most famous, and perhaps, greatest spectacle of the Christmas Spectacular. Also created in 1933, the Living Nativity tells the story of the birth of Jesus, as narrated by two young boys reading to their little sister. The set has undergone changes in the 75 years since it was first performed, but the spirit and pageantry is the same.

History of Christmas Show Goes Back to Early Days of Radio City Music Hall

For 76 years, the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular has been a part of the holiday season in New York City. In just the second year of its opening, Radio City Music Hall first held its Christmas Show. And though the show has undergone many changes and updates over the years, it remains one of the most iconic of New York City experiences, as big as the Plaza, and as beautiful as Lady Liberty.
