Even for a weekend New York is a fantastic choice to unwind. You will discover a wonderful world of entertainment and cosmopolitan beauty that will charm you.

In a city like New York it is very difficult to find just ten top sights but when there is not a lot of time the visitor must make choices and leave other sights for a future visit. New York cannot be appreciated with only one visit.

The Buildings in New York

The whole of New York is a feast for those who appreciate architecture. The Empire State Building and the observatories in the top floors. The Chrysler Building: taking a picture of the Art Deco spire that resembles a car radiator grill is a must. The Flatiron: its unusual triangular shape made it famous all over the world. The Rockefeller Centre where in winter visitors can skate in the exterior ice-rink on the ground floor.

Museums for all tastes

New York has an incredible collection of museums and art galleries. The MOMA is probably one of the most famous but there is a museum for every taste. Lots of travel guides will give details of the huge variety at hand.

Soho and Chelsea. Art and Shopping

Soho has been for many years the refuge of artists who now are moving to Chelsea which is becoming the heart of New York’s avant-garde galleries. Soho, however, still deserves a visit to browse in its shops and wine specialist houses.

Greenwich Village. Gay Rights

It was here in “the Village” where the gay rights movement began. Tourists come here for the excellent night life with coffeehouses, cafés, experimental theatre and music clubs.

Statue of Liberty

Although French in origin the Statue represents the freedom for Americans and foreigners alike. One of the most imposing monuments in the world it can be visited thanks to the ferries that cross from New York Harbour. (Open: Jul-Aug: 9ap-6pm daily; Sep-Jun: 9.30am-5pm daily)

Through the Brooklyn Bridge

The bridge which was completed in 1883 came to join two different cities at the time: Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is still one of the most emblematic bridges in the world and can be visited during a 3-hour walking tour into Brooklyn.

Central Park: the lungs of Manhattan

It started as site of quarries, pig farms and swampland to become one of the most beautiful parks in the world with scenic hills, lakes and meadows. Nowadays it is used by New York citizens to relax at weekends and practise different activities such as croquet, ice skating, in-line skating, attending concerts and many more.

Times Square and Broadway

The place to celebrate the new year and a vibrant place for theatregoers and tourists in general.

Shopping in New York

Shopping in this city is not reserved to a specific area and that is why it becomes an attraction in itself. Visitors try different shopping centres and shops to find those bargains they desire. Shops are everywhere and tourists are advised to pay a visit to the famous department stores in New York: Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Barney’s. Century 21 is a designer discount emporium. For books: Barnes&Noble, Borders and many small bookshops all over the city.

Ground Zero

A sad place and yet a place of hope for the future. Reflect and pay homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 2001.
