Tribeca, Greenwich Village, Soho, Midtown and Central Park are just a few of the locations used for filming in the Big Apple - better known as New York City.
New York, in NE United States, has long been used for location filming. Back in the 1940s Gene Kelly and friends danced their way through the city in "On the Town". The Empire State building was made famous by King Kong and later used in the final scenes of "Sleepless in Seattle".
No matter where you go in the city you are bound to see a familiar building or location. Tours are an easy way for see the locations used in your favorite movies or television programs.
Soho is where "Friends" and "Spiderman" fans can see the Moondance Diner on the corner of 6th Avenue and Grand. Remember Monica of "Friends" dressed in pink with false boobs and on roller skates working in the Diner?
In Tribeca is the Tribeca Grand Hotel which for the film "Two Week's Notice" was simply called the Grand Hotel. In the movie it was owned by the company run by Hugh Grant and was where his character lived.
Also in this area is the fire station from "Ghostbusters" - the Hooks and Ladders 8.
In West Greenwich Village it is time for walking. Here New York has small streets, wonderful old buildings, trees and flowers and very little traffic compared to other parts of the city.
During the stroll there are some "Friends" locations to see. Would you believe that there aren't any balconies on their apartment building? And the apartment across from them into which Ross moved is actually a building around the corner.
In Perry Street is a well known stoop - steps leading up to a Brownstone house. This is featured in "Sex and the City" and is known as Carrie's Stoop.
This is a beautiful location with several areas used in many movies.
Two scenes which come to mind are Hugh Jackman as the 19th century gentleman "Leopold" (Kate and Leopold), galloping through the park on a carriage horse as he chases a mugger. The other scene is John Cusak lying on the ice at the Wollman Rink towards the end of the movie "Serendipity".
At the south end of Central Park is the Plaza Hotel, used in many films, including "Barefoot in the Park", "Crocodile Dundee", "Home Alone II", "The Way We Were" and, of course, "Plaza Suite".
Probably the most famous film shop in town is Tiffany's, which gained international stardom in the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" starring Audrey Hepburn. It was also featured in "Midnight Cowboy" and "Sweet Home Alabama". Some other shops that have appeared in movies are Bergdorf Goodman (Arthur, That Touch of Mink), Macy's (Miracle on 34th Street and Efl) and FAO Schwartz, the fabulous toy store (Big, Mighty Aphrodite, Big Business and Baby Boom).
The Rockefeller Plaza has featured in many films and on television programs and nearby in the same complex is the Radio City Music Hall, an art deco palace which appeared in "Annie" and "The Godfather".
