NYC has great parks that offer a refuge from the summer heat and a place for the community to come together. Learn about some free ways you can take advantage of them!

Planning a trip to New York this summer? The city is an exciting place when the weather is warm, and you can find many interesting things to do. Are you traveling on a budget? Never fear -- there are tons of free events to partake in and plenty of ways to have your own inexpensive fun!

Central Park

Central Park is one of New York City's greatest assets. The parks spans over 843 acres, and has many ponds, playgrounds and sports fields that are open to the public. The park is frequented by native New Yorkers and tourists alike during the summer because it provides a nice escape from the hot pavement of the city! It can be overwhelming because of its size, so be sure to map out the things you'd like to see beforehand! Try a site like CentralPark.com.

A great, cheap afternoon in the park consists of a picnic in Sheep Meadow, a large grassy field located on the West side of the park near 66th Street. Bring a blanket, a sandwich and a good book and you will be good to go! Sheep Meadow is also a great place to throw around a football or just relax and people-watch.

Located near the East side of the park is the Rumsey Playfield, an open-air stage where the city sponsors performances throughout the summer. You can see everything from comedy to dance to music performances, and most events are free unless noted otherwise.

Bryant Park

Bryant Park is much smaller than Central Park, but still offers some great programming. It is located at 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, and the 5th Avenue end abuts the spectacular New York Public Library. You can grab a bite to eat at the Bryant Park Grill/Cafe, or bring your lunch and sit at a table.
